hi all i am currently in search of my last piece of my 5 speed swap puzzle. The trans. This is tricky. I want to do it right. I have been searching but it just leads me to other questions. I have a 95 which is obd1. I was wondering if i can use the s13(because these are obviously obd1) trans w/o having issues with the crank position sensor. A lot of what i read makes me believe this is true. Any of you guys have the same situation like mine? any other input?

I've been trying to get this same thing answered for awhile now. from what i have read you can use the s13 trans with no issues and no codes if you dont hook up the cps. but only in the early 95 obd1 models.

Yeah it doesnt make sense that they would have made a different transmission for the s14 chassis for 95 obd1 only. This makes me believe its the same but i am not sure ive looked through my fsm and that does not explain much about the cps.

The s13 & s14 gearset are identical (FS5W71C). The difference between the two transmission assemblies is the bell housing and 4th position switch. You can install an s13 OBD I transmission/bellhousing into an s14 OBD I vehicle. Do not wire the 4th position switch. Or, if you install an s14 transmission, just cover the hole at the top of the bell housing for the CKPS.

You can add the crank triger to the S13 trans with a drill and tap....

Correct, his vehicle is OBD I so he does not need the CKPS. Maybe I do not understand your statement

Ok so if i am following along here right s13 trans does not have the CPS and the OBDI 95's have a CPS but its not needed and/or does not have it???? This thread is getting confusing. I understand most guys will not think twice about putting an s13 trans into an s14 but im not one of those guys and i think that the fact my car is OBDI makes this more confusing. I like to take care of my cars and try to do everything the right way and dont tell me there aren't other guys thinking the same as me with this issue.

I have a 96 OBDII, I used the S13 trans. It bolted right up, only thing i had to do is to drill a hole for the CPS and make a custom bracket to hold it in place. So to answer your question the S13 trans works with S14s. But i did have a small issue regarding the installation of the driveshaft, there was some rubbing between the trans and driveshaft, but after a little grinding it fit and the car runs fine. Have had the trans in for 7 months, 3,500 miles and no problems.
