hey guys,

i'm undergoing 5 sp. swap thru a shop and i own a 95 S14 with ABS and VLSD. (base model too so if you thought only SE came with it )

i was reading the tutorials on the swap and i think i read that regular manual driveshaft will not fit a ABS car? i'm not sure which one the shop got, but would all driveshafts fit regardless of ABS and VLSD? hopefully they got the ABS d/s but if not i hope it works cause otherwise i'm screwed and would have to wait who noes how long...and i need the car for school which starts in 4 days

also have another question, would the CEL light always come on if i'm using a auto ECU? and if i have a CEL light i won't pass inspection right? thanks for the help guys.

not sure about ur first question, but u should have a garage use an OBD 2 scanning tool to see which code the CEL is throwin. depending on the description of what the code is you will be able to determine the source of this. and at least in pa, if ur CEL is on u wont pass inspection.

The driveshaft for an ABS equipped 240 is about 3/4 an inch shorter than non ABS. I was able to bolt mine up, but I didn't like the way the carrier bearing was pushed to the front so I swapped the back half of my driveshaft for one from an ABS car and the carrier bearing went back into normal position. So yes it fits but I personally didn't like taking out the tolerances.

Yes the check engine light would turn on if you remove the auto control unit, or perhaps if it is still hokked up and not getting a response from the servos it would still throw codes. And I think most inspection places would fail you for the CEL.

To the poster above:The Original poster has an S14, not an S13. The drive shaft lengths are different between the two cars...From the center U-joint (spider joint) on the shaft, the Manual trans has 25.59 inches without ABS, 25.04 with ABS. Thats a .55 inch difference that probably will stretch a little if you want to. Its your call whether you want to chance it or not...

thanks for the responses everyone...i appreciate it. i don't know if the shop ordered a abs or non abs but i have a bad feeling it wont be abs.

also, dattebayo, you're saying that the manual non abs is longer? so that means since i have abs, a non abs wont fit? this is not looking good i'm gonna make sure w/ the shop today.

does that mean that the aluminum shaft will fit regardless of ABS/non abs? cause when i checked it out it seemed like there was only 1 size

It is correct that the spider joints will compress a little to meet the slightly-longer neck of the ABS diffy, but over time personal experience has made me wish I had gotten the correct shaft because of cabin noise and wear on the spider joint. I now have to get a new shaft after about 2 years or so...

Once the center spider joint is removed, I do believe the difference between ABS and non ABS for a one-piece is negligible, but I would double-check with the dealer before hand.
