This is my second 240sx so not new to the 240 world but i just bought a vert. I'm in the process of doing a 5 speed swap. I have everything off. Is there a pilot bearing in the crank that i have to pull off or can i jus go ahead and put a 5 speed one in?

i cant even find where it is. If i fell in teh crank it just fells like the crank. A lot of techs are telling me that automatics don't have pilot bearings.

your techs are wrong. there is an auto pilot bushing.

it's not a bearing per se. we have bushings that are press fitted. you have to have a puller to pull it out, and then you drive a new one in using a mallet.

I know im not a technical guy with 5 speed swaps but i have a thread here that will help you

zerothread/181139

Click that link and it will give you a full write-up that is very good and shows in picture form and word form step by step on how to convert an auto-manual swap on an S13 convertible.

Hopefully you will find your answer in this write-up i am providing you.

Also if you are having trouble wiring your car then here is a link that will help you

http://www.ka24development.com....html

Its for an S14 wiring but im sure it will be just the same. If you are still having trouble then here is another one

Those are all the links you need to know to do the Auto-manaul swap. Good luck and maybe one of these threads will answer ur question

Nice work DriftKing!!!!

Thanks for making such a fantastic helpful post!

The only thing that I can add to this conversation is a little tip for getting the old pilot bushing out... It's a very soft metal... you can take a flathead screwdriver with a hammer and basically cut right through it.. do that in a few different places.. it will cut into little pieces and you can pull out the remains.

Oh.. and by the way... The last auto to 5spd swap I did... there was no pilot bushing there from the auto.. ????

it's technically called a bushing.. and yes you do need it. If you don't have it.. the input shaft will vibrate and cause your clutch to lock up.

But don't sweat it.. they are cheap.. like $3 or $4 each..

Dont you need to change it because the the auto input shaft is smaller then the 5spd?

The torque converter is what goes into the auto pilot bushing, and it is significantly bigger than the manual one. You can actually force the manual one into the automatic one, but it will crush the bushing a bit, and the manual input shaft will not fit anymore. I destroyed 2 bushings this way. Thankfully they are so cheap! To get it out I sprayed a bunch of WD40 around the outer edge of the automatic one, waited a while, and then someone else took a channel lock and pulled that sucker out. A big vice grip would also work well. I tried for the longest time with a pilot bushing puller, and couldn't for the life of me get it out. The lip that the puller is trying to grab on is simply too small.
