5 speed problem

I have a 93 coupe - 5th becomes locked out periodically and now more often than not. One day I have 5th and the next I dont. When I start the car and put into reverse and let the clutch out it seems to fall into gear the shifter is in place but the gear is not engaged. Once this happens I no longer have 5th gear - help any ideas as to the problem and fix??
