5 speed Parts Questions

Ok I'm starting my 5 speed swap soon and have all the parts but I was looking through the service manual and found this



now i have a few questions about that part.

1. What the hell is that?2. What does it do?3. Is it really needed for the 5 speed swap?

well if its in the manual it probably searves a perpose, from my very small intellegence of transmission's, it kinda looks like it would hold the throw out bearing...
