I'm getting ready to swap my transmission out and was wondering if I really need the manual xmember or if I can just modify the automatic one. Also none of the swap write ups mention a throwout bearing sleeve or related springs. Do I need these too and if so where can I get them?

you need the M/T xmember. And you need the throwout bearing sleeve for.....the throwout bearing.... Your trans should have had one all connected to the fork and what not.

Get a hold of a Factory Service Manual (FSM) and take a look at the diagrams of what's associated. You can find FSMs to download here:

Actually, that page isn't up yet, with the changeover, give it a few days and it should be good to go.

I got a used 5 speed trans - can anyone post a pic of that throwout bearing sleeve? It's just the collar that's attatched to the pivot fork right?

I can take a pic tonight. Yes that is correct there will be a collar on the transmission shaft that goes to the motor. the fork attaches to that and the bearing presses onto the collar. As stated you will need manual crossmember. Oh and have fun getting out the auto transmission adapter. That thing is a b****. I broke a bearing puller and a ton of bits before i got it cut enough so a pair of vice grips could crush and spin it.

Thanks for all the answers. Sorry I haven't been able to log in until today, but does anyone know where I can get the sleeve and retainer springs for the throw out bearing?

use the vice grips to take out the AT adapter.
saves you a lot of time and head ache!!!
just twist it out and you are done with it.

Thanks for all the help. Hopefully I'll get the slushbox out of my car before the ZOMGBBQ meet.

Mine wouldn't come with vice grips until i notched the adapter bearing so it would crush then i put a socket on crank with breakover bar and was able to twist out with vice grips. Another thing not listed anywhere is that you will need to take out the cable that goes to your key release. I popped out the white piece with a flathead on the ignition by pulling top cover off and looking to see where the cable went. I have an s14 it may be different but just a heads up.
