you can run bigger brakes without having to redrill the rotors to a 4x114 pattern.

the 5 lug conversion itself offers no performance gains, it just allows you to bolt bigger brakes, and 5 lug designed wheels on with no modifications.

the selection of wheels is a lot bigger not that the five lug wheels themselves are any better. and you can say you did a five lug swap, making you cool.

be careful though, mods like that might change your class in autoX.

I could be wrong, but a 5lug conversion will put you in to a Street Mod class when autocrossing SCCA. I know this is true if you do a Z32 brake upgrade at the same time.

the selection of wheels is definetly increased but dont they make adapter plates so that a 4 lug can run 5 lug rims?

yes, but obviously that will lower your offset dramatically.

a major brake upgrade will always boot you to SM.

As for just doing the 5 lug and some wheels but keeping stock brakes, I could see you going to STS. Or if you kept stock Z wheels, you could fudge around and just be in Whatever-Prepared

according to the ultra accurate write up on zilvia a "bolt on" brake upgrade would only bump you up to STX. i don't know what the difference between a "bolt on" and a "major" upgrade would be, so consulting a rule book would be in order if it makes a difference to you.

talking to my friend who is the scca rules guy, he says the brake upgrade would boot you into whatever-prepared, but if you do a same size rotor upgrade and leave the calipers alone, you would be put into street prepared

well then the zilvia write up is really wrong, cause it says slotted/drilled rotors will only put you in STS.

240s should be in G-stock and D-street prepared, btw.

something else i noticed is that a 5 lug conversion on the rear will make it easier to adjust the drum if you go z32 rear conversion as well.

in other words, by redrilling, the hub gets in the way of the adjusting hole...
