Holy crap.

I was just sitting at the computer when the house started to shake from one side to the other, and I'm in the north DC suburbs!!! I went outside and watched the house move from side to side! :ohno:

I missed it because I was driving and the roads suck, so it not like Id really notice. But now the old clock on the shelf in the store is ticking very lively.

We had one here this morning just after midnight... 5.3. Appears it is a day full of earthquakes for places that aren't used to them!

Felt some shakes in State College, PA. My first earthquake! Thought it was just heavy people dancing upstairs at first.

I dunno ... this may be one of those "don't ask for it!" situations. :)

I moved to Northern California just some months before the 1989 quake in the Bay Area. Even though it was not as bad as the Pakistan and recent Japan quakes, for a long time afterwards, even minor non-earthquake shaking (like when the train went by my apartment that I was renting) would cause my pulse to race and blood-pressure to go up way too high.

I am more used to it today, but, even now, a earthquake large enough to be perceptible (because of its unexpectedness) causes me some anxiety. Not healthy!

Someday, we will leave California and settle elsewhere - one of the reasons (among others :chuckle:) will be to get away from the occasional shaking we experience out here.

Just spend a week in Anchorage. You'll feel a dozen quakes.

My in-laws live in Mannassas, VA and they said it freaked them out a bit, since they've never experienced one, but it wasn't really that bad there.

Holy crap. I couldnt wait to post. I was in class on the 4th (top floor) of the building when it happened. Ok so class was about to end when the floor started slightly vibrating like a big bus was outside or something fell on the floor below us. Then a second later, it got sort of violent and the entire builnding was really swaying back and forth pretty good, you could feel the building move. Everyone in my classroom was quiet and looking at each other when I said "Yo, is that an Earthquake!?". I looked outside to see the lightpoles swaying as well. Then we evacuated and went home.

Freaking AWESOME! Ive always wanted to feel one and I finally have. Ok Hurricanes: Check. Earthquake: check. Up next is a tornado.

I was at work, standing on the other side of a shelf full of bottles of olive oil and they started shaking and I got annoyed and assumed it was this customer on the other side smashing into it.

USGS.gov has all the info. It's rare, the last 5.9 was recorded in 1897, and the reason why it was felt so far up and down the coast is because the bedrock on the east coast is so well connected (like "a concrete slab" one article was saying).

Time to buy a lottery ticket. :P

It wouldve been awesome if it hit at the same time as Hurricane Irene was overhead. What would be the chances?..
