$5,000 repair for speed sensor

In 2014, the G37 Sedan became Infiniti Q50. G37 Coupe and Convertible became Infiniti Q60 under Infiniti's new naming structure - Here's the place to discuss the Q50 and Q60!

Hey everyone! So I got OBD code P0720, which is my speed sensor in my transmission. Basically, my car gets to second gear and then just stays in second. I brought it to a transmission shop and the guy there explained that 7 speed Infiniti transmissions have this issue often and at the end of the day, it's a $4800 repair. Does this actually make sense? Everywhere I look online says replacing the sensor (including labor) should be well under $1k. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I have a 2016 AWD t3.0 Premium. Thanks!

$5K seems extreme, but $1K wouldn't cover it at our shop. Looking at the FSM it's a pretty big job even on a 2WD, the tail housing has to come off the tranny and that means dropping the exhaust and mount, and then the Valve Body has to come out of the tranny. Definitely not simple.

So definitely over $1k, but with almost a $5k quote, would you say this guy is trying to take me for a ride?

I'm a Nissan guy and not Infiniti, but let's put this in number terms. I doubt the part itself costs more than $300, and even at $200/hr, that leaves 23.5 hours for labor. So he basically wants 3 full workdays for the job. In 3 full workdays with typical shop tools and a lift, do you think you could probably swap the whole drivetrain?

So I called him today and he explained that it's more like $4k not $5k, and that it's about half parts. He said it isn't just the sensor, there are several other things that need to be replaced and it's incredibly labor intensive. I guess there's a short which kills several parts. Something like that. I'll post his full detailed quote once he gets it to me on Monday.
