So... I got my hands on a 82 Mustang 5.0 motor and tranny. It's going in my 620. Has anyone seen this done before? I know we have to fab up some new mounts and drivetrain. Should be fun! Anything I need to be careful of though?

I personally put a ford 460 bigblock in mine, I tell you what that was one heck of a job! Is this truck gonna be for street/srtip, or for drags only? I've got a frend that I helped put a chevy 350 in his and it was pretty simple, of course you'll have to do a little cutting, but I know the finished product would be nice, let me know if you need a little info.

the main thing I had to do was cut the fire wall on top of the tranny because the tranny was a little too big. And insted of welding it back inplace I just riveted the sheet metal back in place it would make it easyer when you have to do swaps in the future. Good luck

I should be starting it within the next month. But I don't think we'll have to cut anything. I'm hoping it will fit with only slight modifications. We'll see. When we get rolling I'll post progress and pictures. It's going to be a street/strip vehicle. Just a weekend grocery getter. That is, unless all my Jeeping buddies talk me into trying some kind of a 4X4 conversion.

Sounds VERY cool - Don't let them talk you into the 4x4 thing... Make a canyon-carving autocross beast out of it!

BTW, the old motor was sold before it hit the ground for $200. Which is going back into the truck for materials and parts. :D

This weekend will be detailing the engine bay and new motor and prepping for the install. I'm getting excited!

re: dirtyburty
I put a 78 302 in a 620 out of a mercury wagon. Transmission mount 1/2 lapped the Datsun mount, rear end seems bullet proof, have lit them up through all 3 gears of the c4 and no problems. Engine mounts can be a little different to install, but no all that hard to figure out.

I took all the brake lines off my truck and drew a diagram of where each and every line went to and came from and all blocks, preparing to fill in frame and replumb. LOST THE DRAWING!!!!! Was wondering if any one with a 1978 620 could possible take pictures of all lines and blocks from master cylinder to proportioning valve to wheels and post them of email them to me. The manual I have doesn't show the placement of the lines, etc. very well at all. Thanks Everyone who can help. Hey how you doing to everyone else.

There's a guy in Clearwater FL that has a 5.0 motor with a 5spd and 8.8 rearend in his 77 620. I can't remember his screen name is but he hangs out on the NWDE site and he has a full rundown on how to do the swap you're talking about. It's been about 10 years since I saw the truck personally but I saw him online within the last 2 or 3 years. Be forewarned, the 620 brakes are nowhere close to being enough to stop this beast. Always remember the engine swappers credo; Go she may, stop you must!
