Non-amp'ed 4x6's from a reputable brand sure compare very close. I'd let price/availability drive the selection.

Now if you want to go with a 6.5 (using the underground motorsports adapters) and plan on upgrading to an amp later, all things are different. But that's not what you asked about, is it?

nope, audio isn't all that to me...

plus I have a set of infinity 63.3i (6.5in) that I am giving up because I don't want to spend the extra money on better speakers/amp

If you do not have an amplifier, then the Alpines will work better because they have higher sensitivity, which means that they are more efficient with the power they use. Basically that means more sound.
