Hey everyone -

Vehicle: 1999 Infiniti QX4 4x4

So we had a big snowstorm here in the NW about a month ago, and it was the 1st time I used the 4x4. I'm completely lost because I have no idea if I'm still engaged in the 4x4 mode or not. Here is where it stands now with how ive been driving for the past month:

- 4x4 shifter (left of the gear shifter) is in the 4H position
- Switch on dash is in the 2w position (2 lights on the bottom wheels)
- Car can go 70-80 w/ no shakes...etc
- When hard turning (u-turning...etc), I don't hear/feel anything

I can't remember but THINK that the 4x4 shifter knob was in the Neutral position (when wanting to drive 2w) on the 4x4 shifter and not the 4H position it currently is now. But when I tried popping it back into neutral position (the 4x4 shifter), it will grind hard when slightly touching the low/high parts of the 4x4H/L, and when I put the car back into gear (drive), the car wont move (this being when the 4x4 shifter is in neutral).

Now, my question is...am i over-thinking about this and everything is normal with the 4x4 shifter being in the 4H while the 2w switch on dash in on, or is the car still in 4x4 ??

If it's still in 4x4, please tell me how to get it back into 2w and the 4x4 shifter back into neutral without the grinding please :D

Thanks a million!

Your car is in 2wd drive now. The lights on your dash should light up the wheels that are in drive. And yes, sometimes it is hard to shift the 4x4 lever from L to H or vice versa without grinding. The trick is to shift quickly without hesitation. If you are afraid of the grinding, just turn your car off, shift the lever then restart your car again. And your lever shouldnt be in N, but rather 4H under normal circumstances. 2H is when you are off-roading and need low-range.

The 4x4 lever is suppose to be 4H when you are in 4wd. The only time you really need to move the lever is when you are off-roading pretty much. Normally just switch ur dial to "Auto" and it will get you out of most trouble.
