I have a 91SEV6 king cab that is in really good shape (Body/Engine/transmission/interior, etc.)... we are going to be moving to NC (mountains/ice) in near future. It has everything we really need, except 4X4. Is it even worth considering trying to find wrecked4X4 of same body/engine style to use as conversion? I know I'd need Transfer case, transmission, axle, front/rear drive shaft, knuckles/half-shafts, shifter&wiring harness (a lot) but I doubt I'd get very much for sale so I'm thinking "build off what I have". Is this "sane"? Anybody stay with same body/engine and do this? What would approx. conversion cost? What 4X4 years match 91SEV6? Anybody want to trade4X4V6 extra cab?? Sorry for the posting length and I appreciate any real (experienced) input! Doug in Tampa Bay area

While 4x2 to 4x4 conversions have been done, it's not really cost effective. Converting an Xterra or later model Frontier desert runner over is much easier because the suspension is the same. It's not on the 2wd hardbodies though, and significant fab work would be involved.

That said, using a divorced transfer case with your existing transmission mounted in a custom crossmember, and doing a solid axle swap in front would be an easier way to convert the truck, assuming you have the fab skills. Older Toyota cases can be convereted to be a divorced box.

Thank you! I appreciate the reply and info...although I'm not not happy about the reality! I was afraid the 91 2X was a "different animal' than the 4X4. I guess it really is best to just "bail-out" of the truck and start looking for a 2001-2005 3.5 Pathfinder(4X4) that the wife wants, anyhow! Thank you for at least giving my (hope) idea a shot!
