hey, im looking at a used 1995 pathfinder, and im not sure if the 4wd is working correctly.

it has the selector, and it was in 2h. i put it in park and pulled it back into the next position, which is supposed to be 4h. i know the 4wd engaged correctly because i peeled out in reverse in 2wd and then in 4wd and if definately engaged. it has the auto hubs, and i forget how exactly they lock and unlock, but i just switched from forward to reverse a few times and it seemed to work...

but the gear selector also says this:

2h4hn4l

and i could only feel two positions, i couldnt get into N or 4L

anyone know anything about this? is there some sort of special procedure to get this thing in 4l?

thanks!

I used to have a '95 4x4 PF SE. You should be able to get it into N and 4L.Sounds to me like there's some problem with the transfer case linkage.I also vaguely recall that you had to push down on the lever to get itpast 4H.

Hold down the brakes and put the transmission into neutral and then try to shift the transfer case into 4L.

I had a 95 SE Hardbody 4x4 and sold it with 130,000 miles on it and the drive train was solid...To get into 4L you have to push down on the lever to get it down into 4L position. There should be permantly mounted instructions on the backside of the drivers sun visor to walk you through the process. I can't recall if on an auto matich if you need to be in neutral to do this...I had a 5 speed.
