Hey guys.I have a 2000 Qx4.After a nice covering of snow i switched my qx4 over to 4wd lock to drive to work. All seemed well.

When i switch the selector switch back to auto, it stays locked.

When i switch the selector switch to 2wd - the back two wheels light up on the HUD

When i switch the selector swithc back to auto - only the two wheels stay lit up.

If i put the car in neutral and put it in 4lo and then creep forward, it says it engages but im not quite sure if it does or not. I didnt have much time to play around with it anymore.

any ideas?

It will shift into LO and creep....I just cant tell if the front wheels have power or not. It seemed to lurch back and forth a little untill i got going.

Read your owners manual.

Sorry for the late reply.

I already have looked at my Owners manual. That was the first thing that i looked at

Unfortunately i cant find anything to accurately describes my problem in there.

Its weird. If i move the dial to 2WD and then switch to auto... only the rear wheel indicators light up.

If i switch the dial to 4HI, all four wheels light up and the lock light comes on. If i switch it back to auto from 4HI, all lights including the lock light stays lit until i move it to 2wd.

For what it's worth get under the front end and check your front axle boots. I had a 97 pathy and was having some problems engaging and disengaging the 4wd and behold, the boots had been torn (probably for some time) and the grease was all but dried up...Once I replaced them the system worked like butter. Different engaging method (shifter vs switch) but may be the same issue?

Its the switch type where 2wd is all the way to the left and 4lo is all the way to the right.

I will check my axle boots and see whats going on there. Ill provide an update as soon as i look at them. I'm a college student with a full-time job and i have class tonight so i may not be able to check them until tomorrow.

Thank you for the advice!

Update:

The boots don't appear to be ripped or torn. and when i reached under to feel them , if couldn't find any breaks or weak spots.

Is there an easy way for me to see if the wheels are stuck locked?

To see whether the front is locked you can jack up one or both front tire(s) and try to turn tire by hand. in 4x4 you shouldn't be able to spin the tire. In 2wd you should be able to spin the tire.

After reading a bit on the all-mode transfer case it looks like the “2-4WD SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE AND 4WD SHIFT SWITCH” is not working right. when switched to allmode from 2wd front and rear wheel indicators should light up.

your atx14a transfer case seems quite complicated. the service manual has 140 pages for automode transfer and a mere 28 pages for the transfer case i have. i hate to say that the dealer might be your only help.
