4wd light on in 07 pathfinder

Hey guys. Thanks in advance for the help. So was driving normal and my 4wd light came on and my 2wd/4wd tire indicator disappeared. Was close to home so drove back home. Tried putting it in park and turning 4wd on and off. Light stayed on. Cut the car off and cut it back on. Light still on. Get back to the house and there was a burning smell. Any ideas where to start? I’m some what mechanical inclined. I’m assuming transmission fluid needs to be check/changed. Fluid probably needs to be changed in transfer case. Any ideas?

So update. Got up this morning and drove it. The light was off and didn’t come on. The 2wd/4wd axle indicator was back to normal. The Pathfinder drove fine. It was drove yesterday for about 2 hrs straight with a good bit of stop and go driving. Maybe the transmission was overheating? Any ideas? Still gonna start with a transmission fluid change. Thanks again.
