Truck runs fine in 2wd, but once I put it in AUTO or any other 4WD mode, the 4 green "tire" indicator lights turn off, and the 4WD warning light comes on solid. It stays this way until I turn off the car and make sure it's in 2wd before starting it again.

We need to have 4wd for the winter, so I did the diagnostic test and recorded the number of times the 4wd light blinked.

Does anyone know what the codes mean for 5 blinks and 19 blinks? It's giving me both of them.

I've googled this and found no answers, and the dealer service dept didn't have a clue either.

Thanks a million!

5 flashes: Transfer motor relay circuit is shorted or open.

19 flashes: Transfer control device actuator motor is malfunctioning. (Malfunctions
are detected when actuator motor fails to operate
while shifting from “4H” to “4LO” or vice versa.)

Welcome to NICO.

See page TF-70 of the factory service manual to diagnose code 5. I think if you solve that problem, your code 19 will go away too.

Excellent! Thank you for the quick help!

Where would you recommend taking it in the greater Seattle area to have it fixed? Is it possible that it's something small and related like a fuse?

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

You can swap the transfer motor relay with another one of the same color to see if the codes go away. If they do, it's a faulty relay.
