4WD light blinking

Hey guys, I had my 06 xterra in 4hi yesterday since living in NY we got a ton of snow recently , it drives like a dream in the snow ! the only thing is I was on the highway and I was doing about 40mph and the 4WD light started to flash. The wheels on the dash said it was in 4WD, it had been in for about an hour. I've read some posts and I couldn't get a clear answer. Do it mean that the wheels were slipping and it was coming out of 4WD or possibly a senor?
Has anyone else had this problem?

Could be the front axle actuator being stuck. Does it definitely behave like it's in 4x4 when the light is blinking?
