4wd and 4x4 typically have open differentials on the front and rear of the car, and a transfer case in the middle so that it will split power between the front and the back, but with the open differentials you get 1wd on front and back, so really 4x4 and 4wd are usually 1 wheel driving in the front, and 1 in the back.
AWD usually has electonic differentials that put power to all 4 wheels, and some systems sense slipping wheels, and transfer power away from them to gripping wheels.
