In the Forum I found just a little about adjusting, rather than replacing wheel bearings. Is that likely all that they need, given severe wheel shaking? I guess I can take a look at their condition and try torquing them. Is that 75 lbs for a '97? I haven't bought a Haynes Manual yet. Thanks.

Yes...and it is 75, then back to 0 !! do not leave it torqued at 75 or you will burn the bearing... the 75 is really just to make sure it is seated properly...

assuming r50 / vg33 hubs are the same...

I would not just replace the bearings...consider the cup/race replacement as well...just need a punch set to bang out the races. It eliminates the possibility of play since your are putting a new set that hasnt have a loose gap from previous use of the bearing you replaced...new set wont have this problem...I managed just to do the inner and was able to get away without replacing the outer race...then torque as mentioned above
