I'm experimenting with a nissan sylvia s14 (240sx) and was wondering if a 4g63t swap was possible, obviously I dont know much about cars but if possible it would give the car lots a hp and a large amount of torque, please help with any advice, suggestions, or comments......

You stand to gain no power over an SR20 by going with a 4G63. You do stand to gain a lot of headaches, uneccesary difficulty and expense though. You admit to not knowing too much about cars which does not help you in this bizarre project you propose. Is it possible? of course it is but why would you want to when there is a Nissan motor that can meet your needs cheaper, easier and closer to legally.

well im only 17 and this is a project car for my step dad and I, just throwing out some ideas i suppose. you say the nissan engine would be cheaper and meet my needs yet the torque and horse power is much lower stock than that of the evo?? im going for torque, and acceleration, plus the quickest cars arent legal.....

and also the 4g63t engine is $2000 with transmission turbo and intercooler included. what nissan engine would u suggest that has the low weight of the 4g63t and the torque and acceleration with the AWD transmission??? sorry im kinda set on this engine swap.....

you are not going to make a 4G63 powered 4wd 240 without a full fabrication shop, a team of insanely proficient engineers and machinists and a bottomless wallet. I don't think you truly comprehend what you are suggesting and I mean this as no insult:) You are suggesting taking an Mitsubishi engine that sits transverse like a FWD and a 4WD transaxle and making it fit into a Nissan which was built to house a longitudinal RWD engine. Now you have design and build an entire front suspension that will allow you to drive the front wheels on a car that never did. You are building a car basically from scratch, it's not happening without all the elements I listed and I would guess a ballpark figure to do it, $20,000 to $40,000.00.The 4G63 and SR20 can be built to similar power figures, deciding on a motor due to it's stock advertised numbers is not the best way to decide.

It depends a great deal on you, what do you want the car to do, how involved do you want to get and how much do you want to spend?

Alright, you are 17 with a decent budget, basic mechanical skills, some family and buddies who can help you and you want a fast good looking car. I am guessing you want the car to be running as much as possible not sitting in your garage all the time waitng for some exotic part. You like the look of the 240 and I am with you, it's a well built car with decent power and capable handling. It's RWD and pretty straightfoward in construction and really rugged. I think you will like it and it will give you a minimum of *****iness on it's part that keeps the fun high and headaches to a minimum. We tend to make some mistakes with our first cars and the 240 is very forgiving of adolect fumblings with a well intentioned wrench. I would suggest you shelf the "11 second drag monster" plan for the time being though. Start slow and progress at your own speed to that goal but don't try to do it all at once, you will fail, lose a lot of money and have no fun. For the sake of simplicity and getting the most fun for your time and money I would suggest the following;

Get an S13 trunk, they are plentiful, pretty stiff and the lightest of the bunch right out of the box. Try to get a five speed model if possible but don't get hung up on it, swapping a five speed into one takes about 4-6 hours if all the parts are at hand and there is nothing crazy you have to do basicly drill one hole and some wiring.

You sound like the kind of guy who wants an SR20 swap, if that is the case don't sweat whether the car is a SOHC or DOHC KA as you will eventually be removing it. Do get a healty engine in the car you select though, downtime sucks and dropping coin to repair a motor you have no intention of keeping is a waste of money and frustrating.

I know you want 11s but spend you first money on a tune up for the engine you have. Basic stuff like a rapid series of oil changes to flush out the motor gradually(do not use motor flush!), changing the fuel filter, spark plugs, cleaning the throttlebody and having the injectors cleaned will yeild results you can feel. I won't lie to you the KA is not a really badass motor but it can defend it's honor with some basic boltons. I would suggest hanging out in the KA forums for ideas on wringing some power out of it but don't get to deep into it, it's coming out eventually. A muffler, air filter, possibly a header if you can get one at a good price. you will not get your money back on that unless you can sell it, the air filter can be reused on the SR(or whatever you finally decide on) as can the muffler IF you buy a muffler intended for your futere motor. It will be too big to work perfect on the KA but if you experiment with a metal plate between where the cat and muffler meet with various sized holes you can tune the muffler to flow like it's smaller while you run the KA.

Always keep the final goal in mind when you purchase parts so you don't have to buy things twice, If you know you are going to go with an SDS engine management system at the end don't drop coin on a piggyback like a SAFC unless, once again, you get a great deal and you KNOW you can sell it off later.

Suspension should be the next thing, getting good struts, stabilizer bars, strut tower bars, replacing worn out bushings(they are all shot, trust me) will make your car handle sooo much better and you will be able to use whatever power you have to maximum effect. Get a limited slip diff so you can put all the power down and not just boil one tire. It also improves your handling to have both tires on the same page.

Brakes, you want brakes. Being the fastest from 0-60 is cool but being the fastest from 60-0 could mean life or death, you can always get faster, know what I mean? 300Z brakes are the shizzy and your car will stop so fast your retinas will detach! Overhaul the calipers and master cylinder and make sure you go searchin the tech article here and elsewhere before you hit the scrapyard so you get ev-er-y-thing the first time, remember downtime sucks!

Ok now you have a car that runs good, not earthshaking power but you know where your engine is at and how to drive it to the limit, you have razor sharp handling and brakes that could stop a drunk guy from hitting on an ugly chickthat allows you to use the power and best more powerful sloppy cars driven by guys without clue one. You are ten steps ahead of the dime a dozen chump and ready to start thinking about that 11 second bruiser mill you want to build. That's another post though, good luck!:)

Just go with a DSM from the get-go if you like the 4g63 motors.

I have both an S14 and a '90 Laser RS-T, so I have the best of both worlds. :D

Both the Nissan motors (KA & SR) and the 4g63T are great engines with lots of potential, but each really belong in their own respective cars.

Either an S13 or a 1g DSM would be an amazing starter car to get you into the hobby. :)

im actually leaning towars the rb26dett in the 240 sx which has potential of easy over 1000 hp and comes with the rwd conversion it would kick *** in a 240 would be fast and the 240sx is a beautiful car, conversions start at around 7 which is more than the price of the car but im willing to save until i have what i want even if it takes a couple yrs, im very determined haha!! so if anyone knows a good place for a CHEAPER rb26dett swap that would be incredibly helpful to this 17 yr old novice. Thank you for all of your suggestions

A 17 year old novice shouldn't even consider such a thing. Out of your league. Start smaller, work your way up, or you'll lose money, time, etc.

im willing to bet you wont own a rb26dett powered 240sx.

if you want a project.. do a ka24det. you'll **** your pants at how much raw horsepower it makes.

start small, with reasonable, achieveable goals. that way you wont be dissappointed. you have to know your limits, financially, and mechanically.

anyways a 1000hp 240sx would not even dream of being a daily driven street car no matter what engine was in it. the ka or the sr have more potential than u will ever need in a street car.

sorry, but this thread is whack. yes, i said 'whack'

Everyone knows that B16's are way better in 240's. You can get the drivetrain from a CRV, a B16 with an H22a head, Hummer brakes, Escalade header, Buick Riviera fuel pump,a Fiat Bertone ECU, and rotors from a 2g rx7. Top that off with some Skyline brakelights and a Mercedes emblem and call it done. It'll make over 1600whp which is perfectly streetable with a 1-puck springless clutch

Hah, ditto. You're in over your head kid. Stop for about a year and read and do suspension upgrades. They are easy and worth the money.

I'll chime in here too. I like what TMS said, he's a smart guy and knows what he's talking about. Spend your first bit of money on the suspension/rear end/brakes and get it all set before you swap an engine. When you do do the swap you have MANY options. The most popular include:

SR20DET - stock on Silvia K's in Japan, so it bolts right in and is very easy as far as engine swaps go. When you want more power you can procede to upgrade internals and buy a bigger turbo/intercooler to reach a good 500rwhp if you have the time/money and that will definately get you good track times.

KA24DE+T - turbo your stock motor, rebuild and do internal work. There are people who have got these to run 11's.

RB swap - RB20, 25, or 26 - for your situation I'd stick with the 20 or 25 since they are a bit cheaper and produce similar horsepower when modded.

I think the biggest factor in you case will be the upgraded turbo/internals since none of those engine will run 11's stock. Keep in mind this is a daunting task even for professionals. It takes a lot of time and money. Also, the more power your engine has, the more likely it is to break. Read around the different engine forums and you'll learn a bunch about the benefits of each swap. You'll have plenty of time to do this as you are saving up for it. Then you can make an educated decision on what you feel is best for your situation. Best of luck!:D
