I was thinking that with all this talk about putting a silvia motor into 240's has anyone considered using a 4g63 instead?

(from the mitsubshi eclipse gs-t and gsx)

Which transmission could you use?

This is one of those stand alone swaps, the 4G63 isnt mounted in the proper direction and this means while your doing the incredibly, incredibly painstaking swap, you might as well make your car awd.

That idea goes up there with my gf's idea of putting my SR into a 98 prelude.

You should be forced to sell your 240SX.

why the hell would you do that? for the same, if not less you can get the sr20det, which is far better internally....

4G's are great motors, the 1st gen is bulletproof (moreso than the SR)

It's mounted in a lot of Starion's longitudnally, Buschere racing makes the bellhousing kit to mount it to a RWD transmission. That a big 16G, and the required intake, FMIC, exhaust, and some 550's (the cheep topfeed ones not the 600 sidefeed SR ones) and your running LOW 12's.

I'd say go for it if you can do the wiring (or go standalone) and make motor mounts. It would be a killer swap.

this i have experience with!

you could do it....the potential of a 4g63 to produce 500+whp on the stock bottom end is wonderfull...

you would have to use the transmission from a mighty max pickup to keep the rear wheel drive....

as said before anything with a build date before 1995 is completely bullet proof....the ones you have to watch for crankwalk in is the later 97 up...but any 4g63 built 95 and up could be affected....

btw, why not just get an awd dsm, and not worry about putting it in a 240...seems pretty useless to me...

might wanna look here

The only reason I could fathom would be for uniqueness. You don't usually see a 4G63 engine in a 240.....acually, I've never seen a 4G63 in a 240 lol.Other then that it really would be a waste of money, but hey whatever suits you.:)

LOL Me and my friends were talking about having an 11 sec galant with a roll cage and two baby seats in the back. You could pull up to a viper, rev your engine, put helmets on your babies, have your babies flick the other driver off, and then burn the **** out of him.

Maybe you should do some research before you speak. There are far more high power stock bottom end 4g's than r20's. The 1ga (89-91) 6 bolt 4g63 is a bullet proof motor, stock internals will handle 600+ easily, the record is 587 AWHP and keep in mind that's with a 16 year old AWD drivetrain loss. Cast iron closed deck with beefy internals provides plenty of potential, so again, I say maybe do some research before you post.

Another good motor, although quite heavy so if weight over the front end is of any concern I would probably stay away from that route. Also, as far as finding a RWD transmission for that motor, I haven't seen any.

That's a pretty heated response to a five year old thread.

well foe my point of view i would go with the rb swap because if you swap a 4g into the 240 body then your going to have to make custom mounts foe the motor to fit into the 240sx and find a rwd transmission and a custom driveshaft and all the other parts that is needed foe the swap... thats going to cost alot of money. all that you could swap a rb25 or maybe a rb26 or built a strong sr and swap it. and who says that the 4g motors is the bulletproof motor.. then they are wrong. i had a buddy had 2 4g motor 1gen too, the first motor he race with my other buddy that had a civic hatch with a LSR turbo and blew a rod and went threw the bottom block and the second motor same race but this time he blew his transmission... i ask the people that knoe alot about eclips they said that the 4g motors dont last that long but the motors are very powerful. infact my other buddy LSR turbo last longer then my other buddy's eclips and yea he swap 2 of the same motors....

well you dont really need custom mounts to swap the rb25det motor but the you need a custom driveshaft. for the mount you can use the r33 GTST crossmember and for the driveshaft you need the GTST or the 300zx TT driveshaft yoke... but foe the 4g motor i dont see anyone making any mounts and driveshaft for the swap...

here is the site for the rb25det swap http://www.sportcompactcarweb....240sx/

If you have the skills you could make your own mounts or cheap as well as performing the required modifications to the existing driveshaft to make it work. So I really don't see it costing very much to make it work, as for transmission issues, there are several options in that regard that could work. As for your friend, the one who blew the motor and then the transmission, the transmissions are somewhat weak, but as for the motor, if he had little done to the motor then I would blame tuning. I don't care what kind of a motor you have, what kind of internals or if you're only making 200 horse, you ignite the fuel at the wrong time or in the wrong mixture and things are going to break.

well the first motor comes with the car and the second motor was a newer motor. and my friend is a mechanic a good one too. basicly his two motor is all stock with only intake, downpipe, cat-back, spark plugs and wires. thats it... i dont knoe what he did to the first motor to make it blow on him but the second motor the reason the transmission blew is because he put on a stage 4 6 puck no spring on it thats why he blew the transmission...

hey i might be wrong about the 4g motors but to the people that i knoe that owns an eclips gs or a gst they said that they either have problem with the motor it self or the transmission... i maybe wrong about eclips motors...

Well I've had 2 DSM's a TSI AWD 4g and a non-turbo FWD 4g and the motor in the TSI was trash when I bought it due to the previous owners tuning errors, I rebuilt it and put it back to mostly stock and it ran like a dream! The n/a drove like it was brand new with 130,000 on the clock, no more than 2 psi off of ORIGINAL NEW, not service compression specs in any cylinder and you could shift with 1 finger. The trannys will blow if you put that kind of a clutch in without preloading before launches. When the tires grab, and the clutch grabs there's no slippage and all that instant force has to go through transmission with no form of relief if you will. There's a talon in town (goes by evil_eagle) on the net if you want to look him up and put 200+ passes on his stock drivetrain at the 10 second range (now 9.95 on his old setup gt42r going in now) and over 20,000 on the streets when the stock 2g clutch disk when out on him, STOCK clutch components. For the most part when things on cars break it's the drivers or mechanics error, not saying your friend per say, but if you launch without preloading, drive around with knock, attempt to tune without knowing what you're doing, etc... things will break and that means little to none about the integrity of the part or the vehicle. Engineers are not going to design the parts in a vehicle to take instant abuse in the form of much more than the car is able to produce stock, and every driver should keep that in mind.

This swap is uncalled for. Do an RB26 with AWD conversion. The LS swaps are more feasible than this.

The guys that did manage to pull off the awd rb26 job had ALOT of custom work done. new front suspension, custom struts, etc. Unless you've got deep DEEP pockets, don't even consider an awd rb26 in a 240sx. Far better ways to spend the money than that.

I was speaking of the RB26 swap as opposed to the 4G63 because although still pricey, it will be far more expensive than the RB26, simply because it has been done before.
