When you select 2 on the 4at does that lock out 1?

Or does it still shift 1 - 2 while in 2?

It won't shift into 3rd or 4th.

Yes it locks out the higher ratios but will it lock out the lower?

Not all automatics are created equally. 1 needs to be locked out to prevent wheelspin on slippery grades. By selecting 2 some will do this, but not all some still shift 1 - 2.

Drive it and find out. I'm pretty sure it would still take off in 1st gear being in 2.

very doubtful an auto transmission would start out in other than 1st gear.

I wouldn't be so absolute if I were you. Some autos do start out in 2nd - for example, first-gen Q45, and Mercedes 300E, and even Honda Accord if you put the lever in "2". As Slither said, not all autos are created equal.

I've yet to drive a Versa S to find out... hopefully next time there'll be one available as a loaner at the dealer I go to.

Thx Mosquito I'm just trying to find out which auto is better for snowbelt CVT or 4at. Course 6mt would be best.

Well, of course... maybe I misinterpreted Boxcarbill's comment that all autos start off in 1st gear and that's why I told him not to be so absolute.

No offence was meant at anyone in that reply... I just came up with a few different examples of cars that would allow a 2nd gear start.

I have driven and owned autos which did a 1st-2nd shift in "2" or stayed locked in 2nd, and I can certainly appreciate the difference in situations in which I was scrambling for traction (usually uphill on crappy all-season tires in wet snow). I, for one, prefer having a locked 2nd gear in "2" as it gives me more choice in these circumstances.

As for the CVT's performance in snow, it's been doing quite well at crawling out of snow with the gear lever in "L" with a light foot on the pedal.

I haven't for one second regretted the investment in the CVT. Or the V [we'll I did wonder about gas mileage at the start bt no complaints now.]

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I especially love how the car hits almost crazy low revs when cruising - it makes it a much more pleasant car on long highway journeys. My gas mileage is improving too now that the car's got 14000km on it.
