:wtf2: This is one of the weirdest stories I have heard; in a while, at least. :tisk:

A wealthy Florida polo club founder has adopted his longtime adult girlfriend in what attorneys believe may be a legal maneuver to protect his financial assets as he faces a trial for a drunk driving incident that killed a 23-year-old.

That's pretty absurd! But please tell me, how can someone adopt an adult?? I didn't think you could adopt a person over 17 yrs old.

I don't know the legalities of a trust, but if his real kids aren't old enough to claim the money, doesn't that money still belong to him?

^ LOL! I see what you did there!

If this works, it'll become a standard method of "hiding" money...

This story is a good example why people dislike lawyers so much.
I'm sure the legal community will consider this guy's lawyer an innovator for attempting such a brazen manuever to protect his client's fortune. But ethically and morally speaking, it's very sleazy, as he's manipulating the system to avoid paying out any money legitimately owed to his victims in the upcoming civil suit he'll likely lose.

I think his lawyers did their job and that's commendable, but the guy's still a sleazebag. It's the client's call - a lawyer's job is just to advise them of their legal options.
