Hey guys, I have searched; but didnt seem to find a fix for the headlight inoperative message when using a Hi/Lo HID kit. I have also installed the "bulb out" adapters(resistors?) between the bulb and ballast.

I read a guy states you can pull the highbeam while cyling the headlights, but I want a long term fix. Surely someone has done this by now.

Also, I didnt see anything about wiring your foglights to come on with parking lights. Maxima.org has some stuff I might try to apply to my 95 Q45, but once again was hoping someone has done this before.

For the headlight inoperative message, glancing over the FSM briefly it appears that the headlight sensor grounds one pin on the diagnostic display.. You could just undo that wire so it never grounds, or maybe theres been something else done. As far as I know everyone else just lives with it... Using a resistor probably isnt the most efficient way of doing things..

also as far as i know no one has wired parking lights and fog lights, but I know it obviously can be done.

All of the answers are in the FSM at www.nicoclub.com/FSM If you know how to read a wiring diagram you can do it

Thanks Wes.

I will try removing that ground this weekend. I dont intend to "live with" the message.

I dont blame you at all brother... I would not live with it either, however I probably wouldnt install HID's on my Q either... I have silverstar bulbs and I find them more than adequate..

Just post up if you need any additional help, i'll be glad to take a peek at the FSM for you if you get stuck.

I just did this on my '95 as well. My ballasts werent happy getting ground off the plug for some reason so I am using headlight power and chassis ground, so there are 2 prongs left open and I still have the malfunction light. I havnt looked at the service manual wiring yet I just downloaded it. But the resistor wont work I dont think (obviously because you tried it). Maybe power to the diagnosis wire and when bulb is out there is no current flow through the bulb and then warning light.

I have had JDM clears and HID for years. I installed a resister and never looked back. No problems, no light.

where did you install the resistor? Directly on the plug for the headlight?

I installed the "bulb out" adapter from SharpHID.com, but no dice.

its been so long i forget! Also I did install two of them for each side. keep in mind they become quite hot also. Plus I really don't use my headlights/car alot. But to this day I still do not get a inop light. Maybe I can look at the wiring hookup under my covers.

Downside in using the resistor to fool the headlamp sensor is the resistor must consume the wattage of the bulbs it is replacing- so you are wasting a ton of alternator power to get rid of that message- much better to identify and clip the correct wire leading from headlamp sensor to interior message display unit.

Agreed. Best to find and take care of wire. However, no one seems to know how. Maybe it's not really that easy.

You could probably even take the wire out from the harness connector rather than clipping it.. I was able to do that when I switched out my seat..

BTW Rick, good to see you around. I finally switched out that seat you gave me a few years ago at Carlisle. Put the pass seat you gave me into the drivers side!

glad to hear that. Hopefully it looks good!
I'm still kick'in around the LS3 complete drive line swap. Lots of work. If I do I'll have an awesome transmission for sale with only 5K on it!

I recently added a pair of hid bulbs and ballasts I had laying around to my q45.i made my own relay harness and only used one prong off the low beam plug from the passengers side to give the relay 12 volts to open.everything is wired in right with 12gauge wire and soldered together now when you turn the lights on the little display says headlight malfunction.....i know this is an old thread but I was wondering if anyone figured a way to disable this particular popup

Check out the factory service manual at www.nicoclub.com/FSM/

There will be a test procedure for the sensor that tells you what it's doing... either sending 12V or ground to the cluster - just feed the cluster what it wants and you're done.
