First of this is my first post on nico and i've got to say this looks like a pretty good group of helpfull people.

I had my alternator tested at autozone due to my car droping out when i give it more than just a little bit of throttle to nicely go through the gears like a casual driver. Once under load in 3rd through 5th gear ive got little power from the motor.

Symptoms:
floor it in 3rd through 5th and i have a little hesitation but she starts climbing up to about 3000 RPM and she jerks back and forth very hard untill i let off of the throttle, and then very lightly re apply it like the safest driver in the world. I have a 5 speed, That explains the jerking. I'm thinking that im not getting enough power from the alternator (45 Amps) to power the coil at higher RPM. Any idea veterans? Help is much apreciated. I can provide any detail you need and will try to provide them for you before you ask to make it easier on you guys. Thank You Nico!!

i dont know if this is going to help or not, but i had sort of a similar problem. When i would get on it (and only when i had it floored) as soon as boost would build my car would jerk forward and back as if it were a new to stick person trying first gear or something. if i let off the gas and kept it in gear it wouldnt always die, but if i jammed in the clutch it without giving it a little gas it would die. Turns out it was a bad ground connection, and once fixed everything was fine. I am blaming my blown turbo from this somehow lol, but thats probably my own fault some how. Check your grounds and see if that makes any difference. Also, my alt relay/fuse went this past spring, and someone on here gave me a link to an ebay part (for like $9) and it worked, so maybe that could be the early stages of what you have. If i find the link i'll post it up. good luck

You had them test it.... what was the results? Unless your dimming down, I doubt it. Put a volt meter on the battery and see what happens when you try it.. I doubt much. I would be more inclined to think its a problem under load such as the fuel pump, FPR, or o2 or MAF sensor.

They said the alternator was only putting out 45 amps. I had him look at replacments and he had 2 in stock. One that puts out 80 amps and another that puts out 90.

When i turn on the high beams, rear defrost (electronic), the stereo (volume up) and the heater fan I can see the lights on the dashboard dim, The engine almost wants to stall when i do that.

thats 80 and 90 amps at its peak, They probably tested it at idle, which 45 is pretty normal

I've been running a 600 watt rms amp to a 15" sub. Think it could have damaged the voltage regulator over the course of a month and a half from excessive current draw?

- yep, could be!

I'd replace the alternator/regulator with a higher amprage if you're going to use your car as a boom box, try to find 100A or even 120A. Then replace your battery with something with more capacity, not necessarily bigger in size but more efficient with more cold cranking amps and a higher amp-hour rating.
