Whats up guys. i just got my hands on a chevy 400 small block and have already started to rebuild it. I have been putting a lot of thought into what i would like to drop it in to. I would love to drop the engine in a z31 and i have a 86 z31 non turbo siting in our junkyard with a blown engine. I have never attempted such a swap, but i know it has been done before, I was just curious of the level of difficulty and fabrication that would be needed to complete such a project. Also if you guys know any other good chassis that can easy be fitted with such a engine please inform me. I would like to stick to a nissan/datson body style. I also know that there are issues of rigidity when dropping a large powerful engine into a car that was manufactured for weaker inline 6 or v6 engines (not hating on classic nissan engine but you guys understand what I'm saying), so any chassis that would require less bracing would be a plus.

uh...."Datsun' with a"U"

anyhow, depending on the level of build and intended use the cahssis may or may not need reinforcement, the stock sbc 400's depending on emissions and heads can be pretty low hp, most street built 400's still fall short of 400 chp, which should be ok in most datsun cahssis unless you plan to race it, in which case the motor has little to do with the stiffening you want to do, how you stiffen fro drag racing is different from how you stiffen for road racing

as for shich chassis to use, what you can find thats not rusted will help dictate taht choice, unfortunately the datsuns seem to get eaten up with trust, an 810 would be a sweet little sleeper but they are kinda hard to fine, the dimes and b210's are the smallest lightest options short of the convertible srl's and spl's, the S30 and S130 swaps are of course quite popular with the advantage of having lots of documented swaps and plenty of chassis aftermarket still available, the s130 and z31 both offer better chassis than earlier cars and things like 4 wheel disk brakes and they also come with power steering which can be an issue for some poeple, the chassis you choose will determine how much work the swap is, in the s30 and s130 it's as silmple as cutting a couple of setback plates and spacers

not , its super easy... i have 8-1 compression pistons in my 406 small block....

i make 375 chp 550 ftlb n/a and 575 crank 650ish ftlb with 6 psi

with 10 - 1 compression you should be around 600 crankhp and 800lbft

Note the 3.5 second 0-60mph in a 4500lb car with dot rated slicks

yeah but really whats the fun in that. imagine sitting at a stop light, all you hear is the sputter and rumble of a built carb v8. You look next to you and all you see is a little dats"U"n. It like dating a different race then your own, it going to piss off the shotgun loving rednecks and its going to turn some heads, but its the best thing you ever drove .
