just got myself a 240 hatch, and pretty much the only problem is that OCCASSIONALLY, meaning like maybe once or twice on an hour long trip, the car will get a really violent shimmy going through it. Its probably suspension oriented but it rocks the steering wheel very violently, it actually feels like the car might shake apart. Anyway, it seems to do this without rhyme or reason, but usually takes place around 40 mph in 4th gear (so i guess 2500-3000 rpm). Also doesnt seem to matter on road condition. Any thoughts?

tire balance maybe. dynamic imbalance. take to a tire shop and have them check the tire balance on the front tires.
