I have a 2001 QX4 and the 4wd light stays on. I took it to a shop and the vehicle is stuck in 4 wheel drive, He put it on a rack and I observed all 4 wheels turning. The dealer says I need a new transfer case. A transmission shop said it is a switch that is bad. Is there a way to test the tcm? I don't want to buy a transfer case if I don't have to. The vehicle will go up to 80 miles an hour. Please help.

Welcome to NICO.

Do you have the auto mode transfer case? You'll have a knob with mode selector in the center console if you do.

The factory service manual says to check the ATP switch circuit. Page TF-112 of the FSM has instructions on doing so.

Also ensure the fluid level is correct - remove the fill plug and stick your finger in. If the fluid level is at the bottom of your finger on a flat surface, the level is OK. If the fluid has never been changed, do a drain & fill at this time.
