My son is driving my Q and has it home from school, where it has decided to rough idle and give me a code 51 message. After measuring the resistance at the harness and then at the injector, it looks like #4 has given up the ghost, as it shows an open circuit (infinite resistance). the others all are in spec.

My question relates to an old post where someone indicated that you might be able to get to the injectors on the passengers side by unbolting the plenum and lifting it enough on the passenger side to work under there. The #4 is the second from the front on that side.

Does anyone who has ever had the plenum off think this is feasible?? If I do this, will I need to regasket the plenum?

Thanks for all comment or advice.

Regasket is probably mandatory unless you want to repeat the labor.

Probably best to think about what all should be done while the plenum is off.

Have pulled the plenum for injector removal at least 9 times now. You can get to #4 without taking the plenum all the way off. Remove the throttle body,EGR tube, disconnect the myriad of coolant and vacuum lines (don't forget the pcv valve hose near the coolant filler neck and the C-shaped hose that runs from under the neck of the plenum to the valve cover- they are easy to miss). You don't have to disconnect the IAC valve or it's hoses at the back of plenum passenger side. This is a huge time saver since the hoses that connect it are a b*tch to remove w/out ruining them.

After you remove the plenum bolts, you'll be able to prop up the plenum enough to access #4. If the plenum has not been unbolted lately, it's a good idea to replace the 8 large rubber O-rings. Be certain that none of these o-rings or the ones on the injector have been pinched during installation or you get the pleasure of tearing it all apart again. When tightening the plenum bolts back up, remember that the bolts have shoulders, do not overtighten because the threads strip out really easily.

Wes has a good write-up with pictures on Q45.org on the plenum removal.

If they've not been done and you are removing the plenum completely, now is a good time to replace all under plenum hoses - about $500-600 in parts. Once you've pulled the plenum, you'll understand why you don't want to do it again .

Good luck,Paul

I usually just unbolt the AAC valve from the plenum to avoid this. The gasket is cheap compared to the expense and pain of replacing the hose.

Yep, that works. I just got tired of buying the gaskets, so I just leave it connected and still have plenty of room to get #4, #5, #3, #6 out. I only pull the whole plenum to get to #7- the toughest one to get to, although I've gotten it out before with the plenum still attached.
