The VH45DE found in the 90-96 Q45 is more robust, and should be more capable of handling some boost if you want to throw some at it. Downsides - The 90-93 have timing chain guide issues, but it's curable by installing the updated guides. The 96 came without VVT, and all have fuel injector failure issues if ethanol laced fuel is used.
The VK45DE found in the 02-05 Q45 and the M45 has more horsepower out of the gate, but won't do much more without beefing it up substantially.
If you do this, please take lots of pictures and keep us posted!
