My brother has recently purchased a 06 pathy with the 4.0l engine and he is wondering what the best way to increase fuel efficiency with keeping it as stock as he can. Let me know some thoughts. Thanks

mac ,Keep it waxed - it really does "slip through the air better " , keep tire pressure(cold) additional 3 psi +from placard ,better - next set of Low Rolling Resistance tires (BUT they're the "flimsyest" ! ) ,Max diameter tires , Clean Hi-flow A/Filt., routinely blast clean MAF , if a premium fuel requirement - use it ,you can drive "briskly" just don't drive Flaky - gas, brake, gas, brake, brake, floored, brake, gas, brake ,floooooored ......know what I mean? Get up to speed AHEAD of everybody and then keeping a "light-cruise" ,fun & the way to go.If base timing is adjustable some expert "play"here can improve response AND mileage significantly (gotta def. keep to prem. gas here). The obvious rolled down windows IS supposed to increase "drag" ,the more complex = exotic sparkplugs ( just don't go too far on a "stock" set)."Wives tale" leave gas filter a little clogged cause it will save fuel ?? You Gotta brake for animals - What did I leave out ??

Get rid of unnecessary weight. Go easy on the throttle and brakes - it helps a lot!
Remove cross bars and running boards (if installed). Outside of that, what mac mentioned above.

Also, maybe run some sea-foam. I got a consistent 0.4mpg improvement out of it.

The best thing is to drive consciously and actively. Think 20-30 seconds ahead on your route.. Is that traffic signal ahead red or green? If red, let off gas as early as possible. If green, but no traffic, then it's a stale green and you should anticipate the stop. Get up to speed in a reasonable manner, not necessarily ahead of everyone else, but not a crawl as that isn't efficient either. Get to know your daily route and anticipate stops, delays, and slowdowns and do your best to mitigate them. You are most efficient when you are moving. Consolidate stops or plan your route if you must make multiple stops so that you can make one loop rather than traveling back and forth. Avoid using the AC unless necessary. Windows down below 35, and up above that. Those steps will save you gas, time, and stress and won't cost anything.

My 3.5 Pathfinder can and does get 20+ MPG by following those steps alone. I'd imagine the 4.0 which is rated better anyway can exceed that.

If he is driving with pretty easy driving style, and still getting poor efficiency then something may be wrong.

One question that probably should be asked is: What is his current MPG?
