This system is only going to ever be just an aftermarket deck and upgraded speakers. Got to figure out what I'll do about those 4x6 in the hatch - but thats later.

I know that higher end speakers don't sound as good if they don't have an amp powering them.

So I'll be sticking with a Pioneer/Kenwood/Sony type speaker unless someone can make a better suggestion for my setup using the 6.5 size for my front stage.

Most likely a 2 way of some sort for the rear later on down the road....

Cheers,

It's not that you want to use crap-*** speakers with an aftermarket HU, it's just that with an external amp, it helps clean up the noise a little bit. You really can use whatever brand/cost speakers you want even though you're not using an external amp.

As for 3way vs 4way, I perfer 2 way even if we're not talking about separates/components. A 3 or 4 way just adds too much emphasis in the upper midrange (the 5.5-8KHz) and then is much too sparkely up top (15+KHz). I perfer a 2-way with a silk, textile or other soft domed tweeter. However, car audio tweeters are typically always hard domed ***I'm using Crutchfield because it's easy to search through them***These Infinity's wouldn't be too badhttp://www.crutchfield.com/S-D...012SI

These Alpines would also be pretty good.http://www.crutchfield.com/S-D...S17C2

This is the MClass 6.5" by Memphis Audio. I have these in the doors of my explorer. The cost is pretty good, they have an external x-over and I believe they're bi-ampable IIRC. Also the tweeter pivots, but only around 30degrees or so. There are better speakers out there, but they're not bad for the money.http://www.memphiscaraudio.com...id=16Carbon Fiber

Elemental Design has a line of separates that might work for you?http://edesignaudio.com/produc...r=USDBTW, stay away from Kenwood, Sony and Pioneer if you can help it. They're not bad, but you can do better.

Thanks for the info! Really though? 2 ways for the fronts? hrmm....

Pioneer seemed to be priced right for me, thats why I was looking at them I want a good bit of backfill bass from my speakers, nothing comparable to a sub or anything, but as you know the stock stereo is VERY tinny.

I'm not an audio guy but I picked up a set of Infinty Kappa 63.7i's 6.5inch 3-ways for about $130 a couple months ago. I love them.

These. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-v...8637I

You may actually LOVE 4 ways! My ears, however, cannot handle any of the cheap 3 or 4 way speakes I've heard because their drivers are dirt cheap! If you're spending 100/pair for some 2way's, that's 25/driver. If you're spending 100/pair for some 4 ways, that's 12.50/driver.

To me, 3 ways were invented just to "1 up" the 2 ways. After that, the 4 ways are just a selling gimmick to sucker in the clueless into believing you need a tweeter and a "super tweeter" with crap-*** crossovers to play your music better. I don't buy it. A good set of 2ways are just fine, along with a component set.

I will admit though, Boston Acoustics came out with a 3 way component set in their pro series some years back. It sounded good in the store, but to get some 3way kickpanels to fit in your car would be a pain!

So to recap, go to a store and listen to them, see which ones actually sound the best to you and buy them.

A component set, so something outside of just the normal 2 way speaker because just a 2 way speaker on its own won't sound good? (I might be just confused on that part)

I'm all but turned away from 4 ways now after some research

Yeah, I worded that bad. I should have said "2-ways are just fine and so are component sets."

If you can, go to a store and listen to some. Back in the day, I was all about Kicker, Infinity and Boston Acoustics. I had never even thought of Memphis audio until I poked my head into a local audio shop while inquiring about some Eclipse subs. I took a listen to some of their 6x8's while I was bored and really liked them for the price even though they have a metal domed tweeter. I ended up buying a pair as I left without the subs I was originally going to buy.

I have never once regretted buying them and even thought about buying another pair for the rear, but I now have an idea of doing a stealth install of some 6.5" subs from Elemental Designs in that same location. I'm hoping to build a fiberglass box that will be big enough so I can put 2 in each rear quarter panel. That project is pretty far down on my list though. I must complete other things before doing that.

Well I use a 2way comp set by CDT Audio in the front and, I have nothing in the rear. I have to say that I won a Crutchfield car stero comp for sound quality with my setup. I have a full range sound with 6 speakers total including 2 12" Boston Acoustics G2 subs. I also have a second place in SPL @ 145.8 DB.

I fabricated brackets for my 6.5" speakers to fit in my doors, however i would not suggest my mounting location instead I am going to move mine, (to the purple circle) because they get kicked alot.

With my 2way set i actually find that i have to much highs and Higher midrange where the vocals take place. There is absolutly no reason for 3 or 4 way sets. the tweeter super tweeter thing in 3 ways is a sales gimmic. the frequence that a super tweeter produces is above most human hearing and always above the recording frequencys. Also a 4way set offers a useless mid-range speaker that creates noise between the main base speaker and the tweeter causing unwanted peaks in the higher midrange level.

Stick with 2 ways you will get more for the money.
