I have a third gen that I plan to drop a VQ (the engine found in every Maxima since 1995) into. My dad has a '04 Max with a VQ35, and it is quite a bit larger than the VG and VE found in the third gen. I'm pretty sure it would fit, though. I have yet to find a supercharger for the VG30E (the 30 liter single overhead cam engine in my '93 GXE). Stillen makes a supercharger for the VE30DE (the DOHC engine from the 3rd gen SE). I have also considered swapping in the VG30DE (the DOHC version of what my car has) from the Z32 Fairlady. I'm not sure if the larger heads would fit (the DOHC heads are a lot bigger--not as big as the hemi heads on the VQ, but still big. Probably the biggest change necessary for that swap would be a taller dome in the hood.

I, like you, like the third gen body style. People keep telling me to just buy a newer Max, but I think the 3rd gen--especially the latter third gens, 93 & 94--are the best looking Maximas (Though my dad's black Sixth gen is pretty damn sexy, too). So I'll just drop a VQ40 in it and throw on a Vortech supercharger and some aggressive internals and have a stock-looking 1993 Maxima making over 600 hp at the front wheels.

Long live the third gen!!!!

There was a guy at the National NICO meet in march that had a turbo 3rd gen, if I'm not mistaken.

And, I believe a VQ from a 4th gen Max would fit into a 3rd gen Max. But IIRC you would need the wiring harness/ECU (?).

Yes. So do I. Because now that I have driven an A34, my little VG30 feels kinda...wimpy. And besides...think of the sleeper possibilities.

Chandler, as for your question about the Engine swap in the 3rd gens. They are very very rare. I was on maxima.org for a while and every blue moon someone would come across one on ebay or something like that. It could be done of course w/ time and money. I have seen a few VE turbos on the forums making pretty good power. A VE (92-94 SE) would be the best bet to go with. You should check out http://www.fastmaxima.com if you want to see a real sleeper maxima. I know quite a bit about the 3rd gen maxima and could probably answer a few of your question or atleast direct you to someone that can. If you still have any questions, IM me anytime on AIM: cleming15.

P.S. Hows the motor coming along? I finally got my SR here! :-D

My Max is running the VG30E. Is it possible just to swap out to the heads and ECU, etc. from a VG30DE. Is this a reasonable swap, or are there complications? It seems like it would be fairly straightforward, but there are usually things I don't think of. Would the DOHC heads fit in my J30? I need an engine that will benefit from an SC or turbo, and the DE would get a lot more out of that than the E. I've heard of turbo'd VG30DE's in the 700hp range(SCC's project 300ZXTT). I don't think my VG30E could touch that.
