I have a campaign up right now to get donations to buy a 3d scanner I am going to scan in bare chassis and compile a database of free downloadable CAD files. People can then go and download the chassis that they have and open it as a solid model to design parts off of. It is a big number but if everyone gives what they can then there will be a database that could cut down fabrication time and guessing how far the trans tunnel hole is what is the location of the subframe studs, etc

Um, wouldn't this be some sort of patten / trademark violation?

I would not think so since year one reproduces whole cars.
If I took a CAD file from the manufacturer and distributor yes but this could not be held in any court for infringement on a patten or trademark.

This is kinda obvious, but you'd better make sure you have an extremely straight, low mileage chassis before you start this project.

Year one probably has the manufacturer's permission to reproduce old cars. And yes, it could be held up in court if they wanted to make it stick.

Wait a minute, I think I misunderstood your original post. Are you just trying to render a model so other parts can be designed for it? Or are you trying to reproduce s13 chassis parts?

My 72 240z has never been wrecked and has 0 rust. Also yes finding good cars to scan will be difficult. I hope that the goal can be reached so that there will be accurate 3D model.

If the goal is reached I will have a lot of work to do for donating customers, once all of that work is done other models will be completed.

The plan is to create a 3D model that can be used to design parts off of. But these files could then be sent to a manufacturer like year one and have sheet metal reproduction parts produced.

The thing would be to find a 100% stock and straight s13 coup and hatch. But I have a feeling there are in someone's garage ;).

It does not seem like the 3d scanning campaign is going very well so far. There seems to be nobody interested and having a chassis scanned, and not very much discussion about scanning. I feel that people are reluctant because it is such a high number, but if everybody pitches in or a certain number of people donate then the goal can be reached.

I don't know if I'm alone with wanting to have accurate 3d scans of chassis to be able to design part off of. This will go beyond just chassis scanning later on there will be blocks/ heads scanned as well as suspension parts.

It's a cool idea, but I don't know if you can get enough people interested to raise that much money.
