Hey guys, I was driving my car today after fixing my ic pipes and was boosting around town. Stupid me, I bought the turbo kit off ebay about 1 1/2 years ago and came with a wastegate that I had no knowledge of its psi limit. So now I'm driving my car and the boost climbed like a mad dog and hit 15 psi! I have a stock fuel pump and heard my fuel cut out . I want to get a tial 38mm wastegate but I'm just about flat broke. My question is if a 1/2 bar tial wastegate spring will fit on the 38mm tial knockoff? Or can someone give me the diameter of the tial spring so I can compare the two springs?I want to fix this asap so I can go WOT!!

Thanks!

The tial springs work in your knockoff wastegate. I have actually heard that those wastegates work really well with genuine tial springs. The diameter of the spring has nothing to do with the spring rate, so that wouldnt be of any use to you. Be careful man, i wouldnt run your car till i got the right spring in your wastegate.

On a sidenote, are you sure your wastegate is opening at all? Do you have your vac lines hooked up correctly? I would think that even the knock-offs would have lighter springs than 15 psi.

Thanks 480, yeah I was wondering the same thing! I have the top open cuz I'm not running a boost controller, and the bottom/side vacuum port hooked to my turbo compressor housing. As far as I know, it's correct.I hear ya: I'm gonna try not to keep my foot in it for awhile- don't want to blow the head through the hood lol

I was driving around today and was wondering why my wastgate wasnt working at all! Looked and the vac line had melted off! found my vac leak and now she boosts nice! the one on the top is for the mbc and the side/middle is for a vac source on the tial 38mm wg.also you could try and remove the dump pipe and listen and see if your wg is opening. It is kinda a badass sound!!!

Yeah , it would sound like a drift car! lol . My vac line is still intact, so I think I'm gonna go ahead a but a 5 psi spring and possibly a mbc later to crank up the boost a bit...when I open the wastegate, I'll check out the internals to see if its gonna open Thanks for the replies, if you think my wastegate's not hooked up properly in any way, shape or form please tell me before I take her off! Thanks again!

Actually the Tial knock off gates work pretty damn well. I'm not really sure about the springs they use cause I just bought a genuine Tial spring since their cheap.

If you ask me go ahead and just use a genuine Tial spring and happy boosting.

P.S. Since your going to have the gate opened up anyways, take a look at your diaphragm seals and everything too. If they look good your good to go ...

well I took my wastegate off and the seals looked fine...then I hooked the banjo fitting to an air compressor to see at what psi the wg would start opening and what do you know! The banjo fitting was leaking! It wasn't bottoming out flat on the wg surface causing it to leak like crazy. So I changed the fitting to a brass [1/8" npt to 1/4" hose] and boosting at 9psi...I still have a 1/2 bar tial spring coming idk what I want to do with it yet..lesson learned

When i got one of those WG's i tested it to see when it was opening. Mine was about 14psi i think. I just kept cutting the spring until it was down to ~7. when i finally got the kit on i was about 6-7psi, which is where i intended it to be. Then a couple days go by and I am bored with 7 and wondered what this kit can do. So i made a MBC and put it up to about a bar. Been like that for months and the WG opens great and has never spiked.

Man its so awesome. Totally different feeling. I mean 7psi made the car quick. I kinda did a little race with my freind with a 95 240 with some cams, I/E/H and lightweight pully. I was shifting at about 3500 cause it was a new clutch and not giving it full throttle. I look back and he is a few cars behind me and i was doin 70. I asked if he was racing and he said he was red linning it! So 7 psi is quick. 14 tho is da,med fast.

This is the MBC i made http://www.geocities.com/chmwatson/FAQs/mbc.html

Has been working great without a hitch.

damn my tial knock off didn't work for nothing. I creeped to 25psi with a genuine 8.6psi tial spring. I didn't really check the seal or anything though. I sucked it up and bought a legit Tial wastegate and it worked great. I was boosting a blown motor but it was still fun.

with my t3/t4 i have a bit of lag but when i'm cruisin at about 60 in 5th, downshift to 4th and floor it, i'm doing 90 in like 2 sec! There is almost no lag when i'm on the freeway and highways. I can't imagine 5th to 3rd! I might chirp the stock tires I love diy and that mbc looks sweet! I dont' want to push my stock internals past 9 psi tho

I read somewhere that a guy had the knockoff and the genuine WGs side by side, dissassembled both of them, and all of the parts were exactly interchangeable.

i have a knockoff... I hope it works on friday when the car gets tuned.

As long as you keep the seal, and fittings ok, the cheap wastegte will work.I would check them every oil change or so for deposits and leaks, more often if you have a low boost setup.

Lol, I'm going to be using a knock off as well. So Tial Springs FTW....provided everything else is all nice and cool.

Try going from 19psi 5spd with crower cams, to an auto vert But it will be v8 soon
