Oh, I know I'll regret saying this, but this is what's worked for me for 60k miles. Even with cruise off but in drive, there's engine braking and the engine is running at higher rpm's while you're going downhill. However (deep breath), mine runs about 750rpm in neutral for several minutes every morning while I'm coasting at 70-75mph down a large hill on my commute. A little bit up the other side, when I've slowed back down to 70 I put it back in drive with no complaints from the CVT. (No "slamming"!) Just give it a little gas to get it to about 2300 rpm and it's quite happy.
Sure, I was a little nervous the first time, but even in the manual it says the CVT can be put into neutral at highway speed if you need to restart the engine, and they don't say to stop to put it back in drive, so I figured it was worth a shot. So shifting from neutral to drive at speed works fine for me...
