I just bought a 350 and joined this site. First thing I've done to the car is tint the windows. I was told by my local tint shop they can't put a tint strip along the top of the front windshield because of the dot matrix on the glass by the rearview mirror. They claim the tint won't lay down on it.

Everything I've had questions about I've found on this site so far but I haven't seen anything about this. Has anyone put a front strip of tint on their Z? Is this tint shop just lazy?

Thanks for any input or advice.

If it has a textured surface, the tint won't lay down. If it is smooth like glass, the tint will lay just fine.

It may not be laziness, but fear of legal hassles. There is a mark on the windshield that designates how far down a tinted surface can come. Some shops stay away from any legal issues, by just not tinting windshields.

It's kinda pointless anyway. The roofline is pretty low, so the sun isn't really in your face so much. I hate that textured crap on the windshield. I had it on another car that really needed the front strip. I can't understand why they even use it.

If your tint shop knows what they are doing, it can be done. I have mine done, and it's been over a year and have had no problems.

Beancooker said it and I back it up!! In Louisiana you can get a Eye doc script and get your front windshield done with 50% tint. But illegal otherwise. Good luck with that one. Kidney beans for all.

Man I should have been a coffee roaster I drink alot of coffee. When I was web programming before I went into design I drank my fair share of Juan Valdez's crop.

Ahh read your bio. We could also call Uncle Sam.

This looks really good and is exactly what I want. I'm going to go to a different shop, find someone with a lil more experience.

Thanks for the help and the pic.

yea i think they don't want to do it. I can see how the shop doesn't want to do it because it may bubble and such. I had it done on different cars over the years and its still fine, but I have noticed that there is some bubbling in certain areas. If you like it then go for it, but for the Z I don't really see a point.

It's personal preference. I did it because I drive directly into the sun on my way home from work, and just using the flip down sun shade wasn't enough. It's really what YOU want to do that matters.

Yeah, the car has a low roof line but I could use a strip across the top.1) for personal preference and 2) the sun was in my eyes today on the way to work this morning.

Did you have any problems with the tint laying down on the dot matrix at all? Even if it bubbles up a little bit it doesn't seem like you would notice that much.

I don't think this tint shop knows what they are doing anyway. I have to take it back this week to re-do the rear window b/c there is bubbling in the corner. No wonder they didn't want to do the front strip.........

I'm going to find another shop and get it done for sure.

I'm right across the river from Cincy. It's about 90 miles from Louisville, If I can't find a place to do it around here I'll drive down if you know of a good shop.

It's been about a week since my friend got his front windshield tinted on his Z. So far, no problems at all. It looks great!!
