Lately I've noticed a grinding noise coming from my manual trans on my 06 350z. The noise seems to go away when I press in the clutch. What could this be? It still shifts and drives fine but sounds bad and only 27k on the car. Do I need a new trans? I've searched the forum but couldn't find same problem. Surely I'm not the only one. Please help
it sounds exactly like this guys trans

do you have a lightweight flywheel? those will cause a chatter that is somewhat like a grinding noise and it will go away when you press in the clutch

I'm not sure, how would I identify flywheel type?

When you said it went away when you pushed the clutch in I immediately thought it was chatter from the flywheel, but the noise in that vid sounds different than any flywheel chatter I've ever heard.

If I get the chance I'll post up a vid with the chatter from my Exedy setup. Unless Soup already has one of his JWT someplace.

Ya it sounds like bad bearing or something, I hope not though.

After some thought and done checking my best guess is that it's the input shaft bearing, if the noise was occurring in the opposite situation (when the pedal was depressed) I'd say it was your throwout be bearing.

Is it big job to pull trans out? Can this be changed without pulling trans apart?

No idea what pulling the transmission is like. And there will be some disassembly required. If that's what it is you should check and see what else you can take care of or might need some attention while you've got the transmission dropped. Might as well get it all done once you're in there!

NICOClub Factory Service Manual Directory I advise downloading all of the PDFs so you have them ready to go, but if you want to skip to what you need right now go to the MT section.
