Ever since Mobil1 reformulated to the new API standard for smog reasons, the new Mobil1 isn't nearly as good as the old stuff. They're using a cheaper addative package and they had to take out a number of additives that were good for the engine, but 'bad' for CARB and smog. I forget the new federal API standard information, but it isn't good for engines. A lot of engine builders who used to break motors in on Mobil1 blew the motors on the first dyno runs.
If you're going to use Mobil1, make sure you really break the motor in on a good motor oil that is not smog compliant. We break the race motors in with Chevron Delo, which is a Diesel oil that doesn't have to adhere to the standard.
Once they're broken in, we use Motul 300V. It's expensive, but its the best (I think in excess of $8, quart).
