My son got back from Iraq in August and bought this gorgeous 2005 350z.

He's had the car just about a month and last week had to have a new clutch put in it.

Mileage: almost 40k.

Is this an unusual repair at this mileage?

That's not really unusual. I'm getting close to 54 and will be needing one soon

Congratulations on his return,

::My stock clutch is at 791xx miles right now. I've never had any problems with it so far.

I've seen a large amount of Z owners replace their clutches between 30-50k.

A repair at 40k is not unusual.

I would suggest an aftermarket clutch from a reputable company next time he replaces it. The nissan ones tend not too last that long for some reason.

Clutch life is all dependant on the driver and how they are on the clutch.I've replaced 350Z clutches at 25,000... and I've replaced them at 90,000.It's all in the owner and how they are on the car.

Congrats on your boy's safe return home!

My 03 Z is at 42k and the clutch still feels new. I also do not daily drive the car, and never beat on it or raced it. I have had cars that I did drive harder that have gone through clutches almost as often as oil changes. All depends on how you drive it. I sold my 96 Nissan 4x4 truck a couple years back with 165k miles on it and original clutch. I know it was the original because I bought the truck new in 95.

I have had friends with 350Z's who needed to replace them multiple times before even 20k miles, but I can see mine lasting the life of the car, or at least until I start adding some power! If you are going to blame anybody for the short life of your son's clutch, it will be the previous owner. General rule of thumb: do not buy cars from kids!

Number one factor in clutch life. Things like riding the clutch, using it as a brake on inclines and luggy downshifts (not rev matching) all wear harder on the clutch.

I'm still on the original clutch at 72,000 miles.

From one vet to another, thank him for his service.

Better yet, tell him to join up here.

all depands on how the car was driven, ive seen abused Z's clutches go out as early as 30,000 miles, the earliest ive seen was 7k

my Z currently has about 92k on the clock and still the original clutch. I am starting to notice its getting a bit soft, but still very manageable. I bought it with about 75k and the previous owner took very good care of it though

When I first bought my Z, it had about 43k on it. 5 DAYS after driving it off the lot I was back at the dealership for a new clutch. To be honest, I did pop it a few times, which is a bad idea on a worn clutch like that . Not to mention it wasn't on the extended warranty (wear and tear item) .

And since I was broke after just having bought the car itself, I had to replace with a nissan clutch.... it sucks big floppy donkey pene. I will be putting an ACT kit in there after I get my prelim. mods in there after Iraq.

in summary, clutches go whenever, depending on the driver, milage on the clutch, and clutch quality. No big deal, just kinda expensive to repair....

I had my 05 350 for almost 5 years and 59k miles. I had zero clutch/tranny issues(except grinding 2nd sometimes). Actually I had zero mechanical issues with the car. I didn't drive it hard everyday, but it still grabbed pretty hard before I traded it in.

Hi, no it should last about 60000 km. Do you know where I can get a navigationdisc for scandinavia to my 350 z-2005?

Z stock clutches are actually quite good for being stock. But liek any cluth if you ahve PPL feather them too much they will burn out.

So that the clutch fail may mean not mena the car was beaten on beofre, just driven by someone who places too much premium on smooth engagement w/o understanding clutches ( for example many women drive like this, I cringe in the rare instances when I discover my wife moved the Z in the driveway for any reason)

the clutch on my one Z lasted over 60,000 mile seven though I did many street races with it and it was forced induction for 50,000 miles of its life some of those miels where with the 9psi pully and 411 RWHP( at which point it started to slip a bit)

So i have no complaints
