I finally got around to burning a whole tank of gas through my s14 sr20de, which included a trip to nicofest at carlisle and a weekend's worth of ragging on the car with autocross. I went 560km on 10.8 gallons of 87 octane, which equals a little over 32mpg. I was worried because 5 gear is short on the non-turbo gearbox, making you have to spin the motor to 3100-3200rpm to go 65mph. The car was pretty quick around the track too, you just have to rev the piss out of it (ahhh, 7500rpm redline I love you)

That's not surprising. I was getting 28 to 29 mpg with my SR and at the time it was pushing 270 whp. That was even with a few hard accelerations from time to time also.

Yeah I had the same experience with my turbo coupe. I dunno, I was expecting worse gas mileage in comparison, especially with track time factored in.

How the hell is an Sr20det gets better mpg than my KA24de?The best I could do is 27 mpg with a 140,000+ mileage motor, most of the time it would average out 25 but lately it is doing around 20-22 mpg. I have no idea whats going on with my motor, and I don't care anyways cause I'm going SR pretty soon.

Yeah I'm with you on that one. Getting a little over 22mpg on my KA. Everything is stock except the AEM intake and Magnaflow exhaust... Mine is at about 145,000.

So we are not only getting less power, no turbo, but on top of it all we are getting worse gas mileage? GRRR. I really wish I could replace my KA, thankfully it runs good for me. Slow but reliable, like a damn mule...

Its no torque monster, but its got some decent top end (165hp). I like the sound it makes (the engine im talking about, I just have a stock exhaust on). Its pretty sporty, it revs quick/smooth even with the stock flywheel and has a great redline as previously mentioned. I was one of 8 or 9 cars out of a field of 50+ to get under 1 minute on the autocross track at carlisle (I beat quite a few turbo cars even), so its definitely no slouch in the right hands. Its stock, so drivability is as good as can be for a 90's 4 cylinder. Its light weight, gets good gas mileage, etc. Really the only drawback is that its weak compared to turbocharged motors in the torque and horsepower department.

cool man, i wanting to do something diffrent and i really like the engine. it reminds me of the engine i have now. the 4age, it revs quick and feels amazing to drive. its got real good mid range power. i can feel the cams in the car... which are factory.. it a good engine.

where did you get yours from?

ive been looking for one but cant really find what im looking for.

a company makes mounts for the my car so that not a big deal its just finding a engine and gettng a driveshaft made.

have you guys ever tried puting "Slick 50" in your car? or any other full engine treatments. Iv used it on my 87 camaro and and my 240 after the full tune up i gave my car i was probubly getting around 23 or 24 mpg and then after the slick 50 im probubly getting around 27 or 28 on the highway. i use hardly any gas on backroads tho. its like 10 dollars at walmart. it also smothes out rough idles like magic.

We ended up getting 25mpg.

I we have the turbo 5 speed gearbox, not much better RPM wise.

I searched the internet and called around. Most places do not carry it as regular stock, the company I got it from got it by mistake. Keep your eyes on ebay, they show up every once and a while (but then again, it is ebay). Mine came from JDM Engine Zone, which also happened to have it posted on ebay I found out. If you're willing to wait, I'm sure anyplace could get one for you super easy, its a common motor in japan. I only paid about $950 for mine, so dont overpay.

Correct me if im wrong. ( my speedo dosent work) but dosent the KA transmition also require you to do around 3000 rpm to go 65? and isnt that pretty common with 4 cylinder sports cars?

Ive gotten 32MPG out of my old SOHC.

It was all stock engine wise, with 180K on it. I just had suspension mods, and I drifted it often. The only deviation from factory was no emissions and a crack in the TB boot. It ran lean, but always made good power.

A couple of times Ive gotten 30-33mpg on a whole trip to drift practice. That's including 4 tires, a jack, small tool box and some times a passenger. I think it was about 80 miles one way plus 10-30 "miles" on track.

I'm sure the key was the leaky air boot, as every one knows nissan's usually run rich. IMO most engines in 240's should get 28-30mpg easy as long as they are tuned right and the differential ratio isn't way out of the engines highway cruising range.

I'm guessing not too many people on here would be willing to invest in a piggyback fuel controller and dyno time to get extra mpg's safely (not that your method isnt totally baller ), but thats definatly an option.

i was leaving just as josh went up to meet you but i would have liked to see your setup in person and how the car did around the track. not bad gas mileage. the best ive done so far is 34mpg on a tank of gas with mixed driving.
