Yes its true, while my in-town milage is poor (17 mpg, with mostly stop and go+ urban hiway and AC on) I just figured I better add some pure hiway milage to my break in.SO I just drove approx 30 miles in 6th between 60 and 75 mph.

31 MPG!!!..

yeah yeah yeah.....dont get too used to it. After break in when you can take it past the 3/4k rpm mark you will see mid to low 20 mpg numbers(which for the performance I still say is good).

It's hard to keep the rpms that low on a car that loves 4-6krpm's.

Well at least its good to know I have the ability to get really good milage if ever needed (oil crisis anyone?)

But you are right, with driving thats more typically my style (ie. lots of high spped high rpm with the occasional speed contest), I am likely to see much lower numbers.

I am really granny driving it right now, for break-in, IAW the owners manual.

I average 17-18mpg, but it has dipped as low as 15mpg when I ran 2 autocrosses on the same tank. Pure highway driving I get 23mpg or so.

Ok I thought constant RPMs (like on the highway) and lugging the engine (like running in 6th to get good gas milage) was bad for the engine while breaking it in. Ive read that constant rpm changes and load variences (like during city driving) are the way to go. You can't baby the thing or you run the risk of glazing, plus you gota engine brake too. Anyone else heard anything different?

Looney all you say is tru.

But I needed some variety to my normal schedule, as well for break-in as all other was urban.

And while some uirban cuycles gives you good variety , something diferent like some extyra hiway driving I felt was called for as well. Also as long as I dont accelerate it really isnt lugging.

When speeds go to low ( ramps) I shifted down, and I did some engine braking too.

Anyway I am at 900 plus and while the manual says 1200 ( and I will stick with it) I am sure its as broken in as it will get at this point.

Fred..

PS: I am a bit worried about glazing too and I wondered if the guidance from the manual wont produce this condition?

To help pervent glazing and to get the rings seated properly, I thought you were supposed to get the RPMs up there. And give it quite a bit of gas while being in low gears. Example launching hard from stop lights and running up the R's (not to redline) in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, then engine braking in 4th back down to the speed limit. Pretty much from everything I've read, you gota drive it like u stole it. However ask 10 people about break-ins and you will get 9 different answers.

Or 10...

LOL

I kept mine under 4k rpm's till 1200 miles.I would drive like a grandma sometimes and then go through the gears pretty quick sometimes. I waited to go to WOT for a few hundred miles and only did it a few times in the first 1200 miles

My car seams real strong and I havn't had any problems yet.

The manual says never full throttle in any gear.I know there are different schools of thought on this.

I decided the lowest risk method was to follow the manual slavishly.

When on the Hiway, I never ran below low 2000's rpm and never ran it above 4000

It has never gone full throttle yet, or anywhere near.

So you have 2 goals.

1) get clear bra on before Sat.2) get 1200 miles on before Sat.

when I got my windows tinted there I just waited there in the loby. I was hoping that would make them get the job finished well and on time.

Call me tomorow and let me know whats going on.
