Greetings Rogue Drivers!

Last time I had my Rogue in for an oil change the service manager stapled a printout to my invoice that details the "Rogue 30K Miles Scheduled Maintenance" and price for each service. I've already concluded by looking in the Service & Maintenance Guide that for most of these items the Premium Maintenance Schedule (PMS) suggests to replace, whereas the Schedule 1 or 2 (S1/2) just says to inspect. I plan to follow S1/2.

However, I thought this would be a good forum to get feedback on these items so folks can decide whether they are worth the price, something they can DIY, etc. Here's the list and my thoughts for each item. Feel free to comment. Thanks!

*Lube, oil, and filter $34.95 - I usually do this myself but got a bunch of coupons for free oil change when I bought.

*CVT Transmission Service $199.95 - At this price I assume they would replace the fluid since that's what the PMS suggests. I intend to go with S1/2 and only ask for them to test the fluid. I read the threads here about doing it yourself, but I'm more comfortable with them doing it.

*Coolant Flush $99.95 - Again this is on the PMS. I keep an eye on all my fluid levels so I'll skip this and wait until it's required for S1/2.

*Fuel Injector Cleaning $99.95 - Kind of surprised with this since it's not on the PMS and the Owner's Manual specifically says not to use aftermarket fuel additives, including injector cleaner. I have no idea what this service involves but will likly skip it given the price (unless I hear differently from you all).

*Replace Air Filter $29.95 - Skip. I do this myself.

*Inspect Brakes & Rotate Tires $24.95 - Skip. Just got new tires in November and the guy that put them on said the brakes look fine. I can rotate the tires myself.

*Replace PCV $19.95 - Here is another one that I find no mention of in the Maintenance Guide. I assume they mean they replace the valve. I read through the shop manual and sounds like testing this part is pretty simple and replacements are cheap. I think I'll check this out myself.

*Replace Pollen/Cabin Filter $55.95 - Have one on the shelf in the garage and intend to do this myself, thanks to the awesome DIY info on this forum!

*Transfer Case Service $49.95 - I assume they mean replace the transfer case oil, which is on the PMS. S1/2 just says to inspect, so I'll either figure out how to do this myself or have them do it.

*Rear Differential Service $89.95 - Here again the PMS calls for replacing the differential oil, which would only be applicable to AWD, which is what I have. S1/2 says to inspect so I'll see if I can do it myself.

So there it is, over $700 (USD), but much of it can either be DIY or only neccessary if you want to go with their Premium Maintenance Schedule. I welcome your thoughts or tips on any of the DIY stuff. I'm planning to ask for them to explain some of these items and I'll report back here after my oil change tomorrow.

Many of the items on the 'Premium Maintenance Schedule' are IMHO overkill. Unless you tow or subject your vehicle to very harsh driving conditions, they are not required.

A few of these are definitely not required and I have never done them with my past 3 Nissan's as there was never a reason to:
- Fuel Injector cleaning
- PVC valve replacement

A few I would recommend though:
- Brake service is important to the longevity and proper operation of your brakes. Have them serviced (disassembled, cleaned, and lubed) at least one a year, preferably in the spring.
- Coolant flush is important. But not till 60k miles as per the manual.
- Transfer case & Differential fluid change. Replace regularly if you tow a lot. Otherwise inspect.

Finally,

CVT transmission fluid changes are probably the most expensive due to the fluid costs. The consensus by my dealer and many other owners on this forum is the fluid lasts a very LONG time. You can have the dealer inspect regularly as part of an oil change or something. But I wouldn't change it unless required.

I agree with the above poster.
Change the oil and have them check the brakes, and the air filters.
All of the other stuff in unnecessary expense in my opinion.

I agree totally...what is really interesting to me is the fact that the dealer has taken it upon themselves to decide for you that your vehicle will follow the premium maintenance schedule (more or less). Shouldn't they let you decide and base this on your useage of the vehicle as is the clearly stated proper method in the owners maintenance manual.

It drives me crazy when service shops to this, if they would just be up front and let you know which items are "Required" and which are "premium" or "extra" then that would be fair, but it is not fair to tell customers that this long list of maintenance items is "required", because this simply isn't true. And we wonder why so many people neglect basic vehicle maintenance, because they're scared to go to their service shop and get slapped with a $700 bill and guilt trip, so they avoid it all together!

I hope more people are like you and give these items careful thought, ensure the important items are taken care at the appropriate interval, and decline the items that can wait till later or are simply unnessary.

How much does brake disassembly, cleaning, and lubing cost you guys at your dealers? I think i need to have this done since my rear brakes are squeaking a little...

mpattdu,

Just to give you some perspective, I put a combined 228,000mi (384,000km) on my last 2 Nissan's. ('03 Altima, '08 Rogue, both with the QR25DE motor). Generally, these engines are very low maintenance. Change the oil, filters, and flush the coolant with Genuine Nissan antifreeze every 60K mi.

The only other maintenance item is the accessory drive belt. It should be inspected regularly and replaced if needed. I just did mine around 60K mi.

Nissan regularly runs service specials on this sort of stuff. Do you get any promo mailings from your dealer/Nissan?

I am not sure on cost myself as I clean and service my own brakes:

Thanks everyone for your comments. You've pretty much confirmed my thoughts on each of these service items.

Kerrton, I've been really happy with my dealer and their service guys so far, but it was definitly an eyeroll moment when I got this list the last time I was in. We'll see what he says today.

Regards,
Mike

I have a 2013 Nissan Altima V6 3.5SL Sedan with 29,000 Miles on it. I just took it to the dealer to have a service done. The Rep told me I should have the CVT oil checked and replaced at 30,000 miles and that only they could do it (Proprietary Computer program and oil) and that it was about $225.00. 1st question is, does this have to be done now at 30,000 miles ( dealer said that since it was a V6 it should) and the second question is , can it be done by a good japanese car shop for less. I realise the oil is very expensive and this drives the cost. Oh yeah they said my rear brakes would soon need replacing and would cost $195.00. That seemed a little high to me.

He said you cannot evaluate the fluid based on color, but rather the Nissan service dept has equipment that evaluates it on a 1-10 scale in terms of it needing replacement.

He said a Murano with 220,000 kms had just been tested, and even though the fluid was black there was plenty of life left in the fluid.
