Engine seemed to be bogging, realized that the automatic transmission feels somewhat engaged even in park. In nuetral car acts as though in Drive. In reverse transmissions feels like it is loading up but no movement. Is this likely the inhibitor switch or?According to the manual, the 84 Turbo has a different switch than the newer models. Was this changed for a reason / problem? If anyone has any suggestions / has experienced the same, appreciate your comments.:thinker

sounds like your in 2 gears at once. you need to pull the trans pan and inspect for metal flakes. if you have a high volume of metal in it. its time to replace the trans[probably broke an internal hard part]

Does the inhibitor switch control the valve body of the transmission? On your response, if I find the transmission pan clean with no metal, could it be another problem ie, something stuck in the valve body from the sitting inactive for two years?P.S. I do appreciate your candid responses.Regards.

if the only thing you find in the trans pan is "fuzz" on the magnet(s) then your transmission did not nessesarily grenade and it could just be something stuck as you say. But I have not personally seen that happen. Your desription of the problem you are having is exactly what we experianced on a car a couple weeks ago. Granted it was an 03 altima, it is still a charicteristic faliure of internal trans catastrophy on an automatic.

Have done more checking, appears transmission pan does not show any sign of significant junk in the pan. Have continuity tested the inhibitor switch & it is operating properly. Can anyone provide me with an explantion of / testing procedures for the following components. Inhibitor relay, A/T relay & the A/T control unit. The Haynes manual I have does not describe the function or testing of these components.Appreciate any help out there. Unfortunately my experience with rebuilding / working on Automatic transmissions etc did not expose me to electronic transmission controls. Am familiar with pre-electronics from automotive to Alison 5 speeds etc. Be as technical as needed to describe. In the interim I will be looking over wiring & connectors etc. Have found a number of corrosion problems. Are there any common problems of this nature that may be cauing these problems? If I am not able to test these components by multimeter or other means, can the components be taken to a shop of sorts that can easily test for me? Appreciate any expertise / help out there.

Regards,RRRRRRRR

FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD THE WAY TO CHECK IF THE A/T Control Unit IS COMMUNICATING WITH THE ECU U WILL HAVE TO CHECK HARNESS CONTINUITY BETWEEN THE ECM CONNECTOR AND A/T CONTROL UNIT CONNECTOR.IM NOT SURE WERE LOCATED FOR THAT CAR BUT SOMEWERE INSIDE THE CAR.
