A few months ago, I saw a 6-speed 300zx on eBay. The guy claimed that Nissan made a mounting modification for him. Now I see this other 300zx, that also has a 6-speed. However, the guy claims that the old VG30DETT and the VG35DE motor use the same transmission mount. Please help me figure this out!

I'm moving this over to the Z forum. There's a lot of knowledgeable ppl over there that never make it into the NOM forum!

I remember that thread, I have no person experience with the actual transmissions and haven't messed with a Z33 at all so I don't know, but being they are both VG series, they might well bolt up?

It can be made to work, but why? Ive got a few 6 speeds from 350s laying on the floor in my shop one of them has a bad case and two of them have bad synchros. I could use one, but its not worth the trouble to put it in my z. One of the guys that works with me is in the process of swapping a vq35 with a roots type supercharger and a 6 speed into an s13 240sx. I will have to get you guys some pics, its awesome.

It takes a lot, and i mean a lot of work. not worth it. Want something better? Get a 97 spec transmission. A whole lot better built.

HKS makes a 6 speed for the Z32.....I don't know why you'd want to switch it out cause Z32's are geared relatively good imo.

The 5-speeds are generally known as being much stronger than the new 6-speeds... also, the 6th gear is actually a higher ratio than the 5th gear in the Z32 5-speed. You'd have a little less top end but more importantly you'd probably lose a bit of fuel economy potentially.

The wider gearing of the 5-speed would fit the turbo engine better than closer gearing of a 6-speed anyways.

honestly i think the only reason MFGs are using 6 speeds is because people sometimes thing 6 gears are better than 5. For some motors they are (think S2000), but for turbo motors and really torquey motors with a long and flat powerband, you dont need to shift more than 5 times!

I agree, I think that's why Lexus screwed with making an 8 speed automatic.

I don't think its a true 8 speed, moreso a simulated 8 speed, but I can't remember off hand.
