300zx timing belt

So i was given a 1990 300zx engine with no timing belt the guy who gave it to me told me he had just done a valve job and the heads he also told me that the reason the engine has no timing belt was because he needed the automatic belt tensioner the problem is that the markings on the pulley and on the cam gears or off by about half a turn what can i do to get them back to the markings on the back plat and put a new timing belt can i simply move the cam gears one by one to the marking and do the same with the pulley what would you do?thanks for your time and help
