here is a pic of how i attached 300zx shocks to the front of my j30, this was cut from the old insert, drilled and threaded to fit on top of the KYB insert after cutting all but five threads off of it, you do have to cut the nut , i used a lathe to increase I.d. and cut the floor to gain more thread engagement. . ride height is normal and it doesn't rattle. 280zx confirmed fit the rear no mod, ride height may be lower as i had to compress the spring further to install on rear .possible spacer here?, they dont leak yet and assembly did compress when lowered from lift. rides like new.
