I'm doing a 300zx brake upgrade on my 240sx. I'm using 26mm aluminum 300zx, and the kit that i purchased came with all hardware except the (anti squeal?) shim kit which you generally buy with oem pads. The guys at the local autozone just say to put some brake lube/grease on the back of the pads and not to worry about using any shims. My question is do i need to spend the $30 on the brake shim kit from courtesy or is the lube alone fine?

You SHOULD use shims... but I didnt...

are you talkingabout the shims that go on the back of the pad or the ones that slip into the caliper.....

Either way, i had a very spotty shim kit that came with my calipers and I didnt worry about it. Just douse those things in grease and your good to go.....

Ive had my brakes on for about 3000 miles this way, with many panic stops, and no problems!

According to the 300zx FSM I'm missing the following (if you have the fsm i believe it's on page BR-15.)

Inner shim A, INner shim B, Heat Insulator shim, and pad retainers.

when you install your new pads be sure to use the greese compound that goes on the back of the pads to stop that screech noise you heard.

You may have already done that, just throwing that out there.

good luck.

So basiclaly your missing all the shims.....!

I wouldnt really worry about it too much. you may hear the pads rattle over bumps... nothing id concern myself with.
