300zx automatic gearbox problem - can you help

I have a 1993 300zx twin turbo automatic that will no longer change out of 1st gear. I believe that the car is fitted with a self diagnosis system to test if this is an electrical problem before i go ahead and changed the gearbox. Does anyone know how to test the gearbox??????
